Jill's piece on rebreather diving really resonated with me. It is indeed a different animal, and having just had several conversations with a seasoned diver about why they can't go to a certain level of rebreather diving immediately, every word made so much sense.
Thanks for the article and from books, I have The essentials of cave diving and The basics of rebreather diving, I read because there is always something to think about, even though I have dived with a rebreather and open circuit overhead environment in 2006, thanks, great books.
While I am drawn, down the line, to the idea of a rebreather, the silence and the longer time underwater, the risks are quite sobering. I do try to approach every dive with the same discipline that is necessary for a rebreather since more discipline will only keep me safer! I am still drawn to the idea, so much! Someday…
The world is different! Last year seems ages ago! The temptation to hide in a cave and just pretend this is a bad dream is real but there will not be a savior! What will prevent a catastrophe now is each one of us staying engaged, informed and willing to listen and stand up for what we believe in, for each other and ourselves. When I crossed into Canada last week the first words I said was “I apologize for what US is doing to Canada, I absolutely do not support that”! The border patrol, answer was filled with Canadian kindness “Don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s your president and besides, we are in this together!” I wanted to hug him. The relationship between US and Canada has always been special and while it’s so important for the Canadian government to respond to what Trump is doing, swiftly and equally, we do need to all remember that hating each other will not be beneficial to anyone. And you are right, reaching across to people that may have voted for him, while they are also suffering the same destruction inflicted upon us is crucial to get out of this hell! When I feel most afraid for what may happen to me, or what I may lose, I remember that someone else may have a worst fate and fighting for someone else gives me courage! Every protest I go to, every phone call I make, every dollar I donate hopefully makes a little bit of difference. Alone we don’t have power but together we are unstoppable. Our sanity and our safety depends on us staying engaged! Historically, every authoritarian regime ended with the crush of the autocrats. This will not be different, we just need to get there and I am grateful for the Canadian spirit! Your patriotism and your kindness is inspiring and uplifting! You are not going to be 51st ANYTHING! Love Jeff Douglas! That was beautiful. Elbows up Canada, Elbows up everyone who believes in freedom!
Thanks Luca! You are beacon of goodness in this world. Most importantly, you are having these conversations with others, helping to shape a more just and sustainable world for all. Keep spreading the love!!
For all the reasons you stated a rebreather was never something I felt was the right decision for me. Glad you are so clearly stating the safety concerns. A great tool in the right hands for the right reasons.
Thanks for the encouragement, Jill. I can’t wait when you and Robert publish stuff like this. It’s a breath of fresh air. Also, as an open circuit diver, I’m not ready to go down the rebreather path yet. I need to concentrate on training to become a better diver in the general sense. Your piece further confirms this. The time will come when I’m ready. Thanks, Jill!
